Amazon and IQM have joined forces to establish IQM’s quantum computing service on Amazon Web Service (AWS) via Amazon Braket, increasing the platform's usefulness. IQM is a global leader in the development of superconducting quantum computers, building and delivering full-stack quantum computers, innovative hardware, and applications to high-performance computing centers, research organisations, universities, and commercial organisations globally.
Amazon leverages high-fidelity IQM Garnet to increase utility on Amazon Braket
The IQM Garnet, a high fidelity 20-qubit quantum processing unit (QPU) based on superconducting transmon qubits is now available on Amazon Braket. This facility provides one of the best quality in terms of user experience based on the scalability and control of its hardware, making it a great contender for fault-tolerant quantum computing services especially for noise intermediate quantum applications.
IQM’s qubits are arranged in a square lattice and connected by tunable couplers which enhances the operations of quantum algorithms on quantum computers. These algorithms rely on high-quality two-qubit gates to ensure smooth computations or obtain a computation advantage when running. This can be degraded greatly by coupling as they reduce gate quality hence the need for the tunable couplers that IQM has deployed.

Amazon aims to deliver best-in-class fidelity on its quantum systems to achieve usability. With the IQM Garnet, median 1-qubit gate fidelity and median 2-qubit fidelity of 99.92% and 99.51% have been achieved respectively. This places Amazon Braket as a useful platform for quantum algorithms as it can perform various steps of computations on quantum circuits while fully entangling qubits with such high precision.
In addition, the execution time on IQM Garnet is incredible leading to ast gate speeds and high-quality qubits in general allowing for thousands of gate operations within the lifetime of qubits. This significantly reduces the challenges surrounding the effective integration of quantum systems into hybrid environments making the execution of variational algorithms such as quantum machine learning to be done easily. Overall, this increases the usefulness of Amazon Braket as it moves closer toward commercial usability
Dr. Jan Goetz, Co-CEO and Co-founder of IQM Quantum Computers reported that “Onboarding to Amazon Braket is an exciting opportunity for us to demonstrate our superconducting quantum computers with high fidelities, enabled through our unique IQM tunable couplers. This combination boosts algorithm performance, provides high quantum volume, and full entanglement across the whole processor.”
Also, Dr. Mikko Välimäki, Co-CEO of IQM Quantum Computers added, “We are thrilled to join forces with Amazon Braket to speed up scientific research and software development for quantum computing with IQM’s innovative hardware. This is the beginning of an exciting journey in quantum exploration.”
Amazon strongly believes that the use cases that could emanate from this partnership will be enormous as significant progress in quantum algorithms for optimisation, simulation, and machine learning across various fields such as life sciences, chemistry, and other industrial applications is anticipated. As IQM drives the adoption of high-quality fidelity in its qubits, more algorithms will be deployed at rates faster than what is available today. This positions it for further growth and opportunity to lead innovation in quantum hardware first in Europe and globally eventually.
