SK Telecom has been at the forefront of quantum encryption research since establishing its quantum technology research centre in 2011, and in 2018 acquired ID Quantique. In October 2024, SKT introduced a hybrid encryption solution combining QKD and PQC. SKT's QKEV7 quantum encryption chip received certification from South Korea's National Intelligence Service in November 2024.
In 2025, SKT exchanged its ID Quantique shares for a stake in IonQ, combining quantum cryptography with AI data centre applications.
